How to have my Passport or Driver’s License notarized?

Updated: Apr 19, 2022

Clients may need a notarized copy of their Passport, Driver’s License, ID, or other similar documents. Few states’ notarial laws address specifically the issue of certifying copies of passports and driver licenses. Here are some options for reference:

👉 For states allow notaries to notarize a photocopy of a document as a "True Copy".

A notary may make a photocopy of the client's document, then write or fill out the “True Copy” notarial certificate, then put their signature and the stamp.

State of ______________
County of _____________

I certify this to be a complete, full, true and exact reproduction of the original document. Certified this_____ day of _____, 20 _____

👉 For states do not allow notaries to notarize a photocopy of a document as a "True Copy".

In some cases, notaries are not allowed to attest or certify copies of ID, even documents of any type. Then the client and custodian of the passport (or driver's license) will make a statement about a copy of his/her ID document and the notary will notarize the client’s signature on that statement.

  • Clients should present the original document to the notary.

  • The passport or Driver’s License must be valid and only the person to whom it belongs can obtain this notarized statement.
